Reef Check Methods
Reef Check employs scientific methodologies specifically designed to establish a uniform global protocol for community-based monitoring of reef health.
The objective of Reef Check monitoring is to assess broad-scale trends in reef condition over time, both locally and globally. Long-term monitoring is crucial for comprehending the impacts of management strategies, the disturbance and recovery patterns of reefs, and changes occurring in response to various pressures, be they local (e.g., sediment runoff) or global (e.g., climate change).
Our survey teams, in collaboration with supporting dive operators, conduct surveys at popular dive sites at a fraction of the cost of standard government surveys.
The Reef Check approach provides benefits beyond data collection by fostering community capacity building. It serves as a platform for diverse individuals and organizations to collaborate, shares findings with reef tourists, and communicates locally-relevant results to engage and empower local communities in understanding and addressing reef health issues.
